Menstrual CycleYour menstrual cycle is based of 3 phases:
1) Shedding of the uterine lining (known as your period) 2) Ovulation ( When the egg is released) 3) Luteal Phase |
Shedding of the Uterine Lining:
Your Period happens because in your last cycle you didn't conceive. What is coming out of your body is the thickened area in the uterine where your potential baby would have been held. |
What I always believed:
In reality I believe that your cycle would start on Ovulation but due to it is hard to detect ovulation alone unlike your period this is why we start our cd (cycle day) from the first day of period blood being observed. |
Ovulation is a sensitive matter because when trying to conceive, time is crucial to get your released egg fertilized. Ovulation usually happens 2 weeks before and after your menstruation based on a 28 day cycle, but may vary from woman to woman.
The Ovulation Process
Ovulation is the time in a females menstrual cycle in which a mature egg is released from the ovarian follicles into the oviduct ( the passageway from the ovaries to the outside of the body).
Then the egg is available to be fertilized by sperm. The lining of the uterus is thickened to be able to receive a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized in its time period of 12-24 hours after ovulation, the uterine lining as well as blood will shed during menstruation which typically occurs 2 weeks after ovulation.

Luteal Phase
The Picture on the side is based on a 28 day cycle. but every woman goes thru this phase every month.
Luteal phase (the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation; the corpus luteum secretes progesterone which prepares the endometrium for the implantation of an embryo; if fertilization does not occur then menstrual flow begins)
